Structural Yoga Therapy
adapting to the indvidual

Structural Yoga Therapy™ adapts yoga to the client’s unique needs.
It respects the body's innate capacity to recognize safe, healthy movement and healing. When health is optimal, there is a natural balance of muscle strength and range of motion. But illness, injury and structural anomalies can disrupt that harmony. Structural Yoga therapists design a unique yoga program to address the client’s pain and discomfort brought on by body misalignment or injury.

The Structural Yoga Therapist

• Identifies and eliminates problematic movements that limit range of motion detects muscle weaknesses that contribute to imbalance re-educates the body to move as it was designed to move through classical yoga postures ensures the client understands and properly executes the postures by demonstrating the exercises and observing the client perform them provides handouts for home practice and encourages ongoing contact with the therapist periodically reassesses and adjusts the program to address changes

• Encourages continued progress:
In addition to using yoga poses to strengthen and realign the body, Nitya takes into account the client's personality, lifestyle, attitude and stress level.

As necessary, she incorporates other yoga techniques such as
• breathing and meditation
• relaxation methods
• lifestyle adjustments based on ayurvedic therapies

Recent medical studies confirm the value of therapeutic interventions known to yogis for thousands of years. By employing these techniques, Nitya gently invites her clients to find the personal yogic path that will carry them to spiritual growth and transformation and health.

The goal of yoga therapy is to return to a state of balance and harmony. Achieving this state of peace and tranquility returns the body and mind to ease. Disease naturally melts away. Give yourself the gift of harmony through yoga. Small group classes, workshops, and private Yoga Therapy sessions are offered with this goal of achieving "sattva", and relieving suffering, pain, and discomfort.

“The purpose of yoga therapy is to lead us to the Self.
Once there, bliss is experienced”

Training of Structural Yoga Therapists

Structural Yoga Therapists undergo a rigorous two year, 700-hour training that involves extensive studies in anatomy, biomechanics, the application of therapeutic movement, and yogic psychology, as well as the application of the more subtle aspects of classical yoga and the related field of Ayurveda. To date over 40 graduates of the training have written papers adapting SYT approaches for specific conditions. These papers are submitted to the International Association of Yoga Therapy for publication in its professional journal (www.iayt.org).

Private One-on-One Yoga Therapy Sessions

Rather than prescribe treatments, yoga invites presence, participation, personal transformation, and long-term well-being through partnership with a Yoga Therapist.

Step One - Initial Complimentary Phone Consultation

An initial phone consultation begins the process of getting to know concerns, needs, inspirations and health goals. This process brings comfort to the impending relationship between Therapist and client and begins the process of developing a shared vision for healing.

Step Two - Assessment Session ($150 - 90 Minute Session)

Following the initial phone consultation, an extensive in person Assessment takes place. This session may consist of several components depending on client needs including an in-depth interview, postural, spine, gait and breath analysis, sacroiliac stability evaluation and muscle testing procedures including range of motion and muscle strength testing. Simple movement therapy (asana), breathwork (pranayama), relaxation techniques and preliminary dietary and lifestyle modifications are recommended and given to the client at the end of the first session.

Because most clients come seeking pain relief, this is a primary focus during Session Two. Therapies to reduce inflammation, pain and worry, and increase healing circulation and relaxation are considered a priority during the development stages of a Yoga Therapy program. In addition, the understanding and correcting of habitual movements that can be the cause of pain are explored.

Step Three - Comprehensive Personalized Home Program Session, ($130 - 75 Minute Session)

Based on findings from Session Two, a personalized Yoga Therapy program is recommended. During Session Three, the client practices an agreed-upon, personalized program and a detailed handout is given for home practice. Complimentary e-mail consultations are encouraged during the initial stages of home practice so that the client feels comfortable and confident with their program.

Session Three incorporates many of the same therapies introduces during the Assessment Session with emphasis on bringing balance and vitality to areas in need. Because we are multidimensional beings, all aspects of the client's well being are considered as an integral part of the healing process.

Step Four - On The Mend - Refinement of the Home Program $130 -75 Minute Session)

Normally two to three weeks later, client and Therapist meet to evaluate the program. Progress is reviewed, changes are made and a new detailed road-to-wellness program is established for continued home practice. Session Four is a fortifying process, where the focus lies on strengthening areas of weakness at the physical, energetic, emotional, mental and wisdom levels, bringing the whole person into balance.

Health Maintenance - Quarterly Private Therapy Follow Up Sessions ($130, 75 Minute Session)

It is recommended that Therapist and client meet on a quarterly basis to maintain lasting wellness.
